"52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!"
Do not wait until it's too late to believe what Jesus says is true. The Jews were saying that if He is God, he should save himself, He can save others but not Himself, let's see if Elijah will come save him, etc...mocking Him. What they did not know or choose not to believe was that this death was necessary for their life. It wasn't until it's fulfilled and the signs appeared that they start to fear and see that Jesus was the Son of God.

And after it was fulfilled, they still did not believe, that Jesus was the Son of God. They always thought (maybe now some of them still think), that they did right and that Jesus should be punished like that because of his sin:
Isaiah 53:4
Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows;Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, andafflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,And by His stripes we are healed.
