"Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. "
We often hear that we should shine in this dark world and give light to those, who walk in the darkness. That's true!!! Because if we do so "they may see [our] good works, and glorify [our] Father which is in heaven. "
But one thing we I often forgot to mention, when I came along these two verses, was that before we can shine in this world ("before men") we should shine in the house, so that our light "giveth light unto all that are in the house". So it's important to have a house filled with light first, and afterwards to shine outside the house so that more people may come into this house.

that is true, and it is again reemphasized in a different perspective in 1 John 4:20
"If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?"
since our family is the smallest unit of a society, we start our light there. then extend that to the church (our brethren), then to the outside world. otherwise, God is going to call us a liar :(
