We had just heard a sermon about this chapter. However, there are still certain places that puzzle me. I cannot really understand the context of some of the verses. For example:
8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”
I cannot really see the connection of verses 9 & 10 with it's context. There seem to be some sort of spiritual meaning about the light of the world. However, what does it have to do with people wanting to stone Jesus? It seems as if Jesus is trying to teach His disciples something.
Also:
16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
Why did Thomas say 'that we may die with Him'? What did he mean by that? It almost could sound like he is mocking Jesus.

If I did understand the issue my respons would be this:
It is a reason why the Jews want to stone/kill Jesus. Because they can not accept Jesus the light, they are in the darkness. They have no light in them. (John 1- there is more about "light"). And therefor they are walking in the dark and stumble (over Jesus?)(can rom 9:32-33 be referred to this part?)
I guess it is only a small part of this whole thing and more can be added.
I assume you also had some thought about it?
similar to the post above, could light refer to Jesus? And that they must do work while he is still with them. The Jews want to stone him, but regardless of it, Jesus has work that he must do while he is still on earth.
I don't think Thomas was mocking Jesus as much as they were expecting to Jesus to be stoned, and therefore they will die together?

it definitely seems like a similar situation to where Jesus said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan.' here, the disciples are also trying to stop the work Jesus must do. very much like what Phillip said, Jesus mentioned the times in a day. it seems like he is telling his disciples that the time is running out, when else will He do it if He doesn't do it now?
as for vs. 16, there are some confusions to this verse. since some English tranlations use upper case 'Him' (NKJV), while others use lower case 'him' (NIV). we know it's Jesus he was referring to, if it is upper case 'Him'. however, that is not always the case in all translations. therefore, there is definitely room to looking it further. if it is upper case 'Him', then we can relate it to vs. 8 and what phillip mentioned. can you tell from the German translation?
